We have the attention of the Walnut Creek City
Council! Our letter writing response to City Council
regarding the proposed city cutbacks was overwhelming. The
City had a file folder an inch thick with exclusively WCM
letters.
Several members addressed the Council at the meeting Tuesday
night, driving our point home… We oppose the current
recommendation to eliminate Kerry’s position. The
Council members clearly heard how much we value Kerry and our
coaching staff, and the asset WCM is to the community.
Council members asked City staff to provide more information
about the financial relationship between our Team and the
City. It is our assertion that Team members pay more in pool
fees than the amount the City pays to coaches in salaries and
benefits.
Board members intend to work with City staff to ensure that
the Council members receive accurate and complete
information. We will be present at the weekly City Council
meetings that will be held between now and the June 15 meeting,
when the Council adopts a final budget.
We are hopeful that we will be able to work out an arrangement
with the City to retain our coaches and keep our member costs
affordable.
