15,during the 10:30
practice, WCM member Jack Bertram had an apparent heart attack
while in the water swimming. He was quickly removed from the water,
assessed, ventilated, gievn CPR, and shocked with an AED. He was
transported to John Muir, but unfortunately did not pull
through.
Jack came to WCM by way of the Intensive
Training Camp last March. He and wife Sylvia live in Sanoma,
where Jack pretty much swam by himself without any coaching. At our
Camp, Jack really got to know our entire coaching staff and decided
he would like to come down to Walnut Creek and get coached and swim
with some really great teammates. He was pointing towards the World
Championships in Sweden next July. Jack was retired Navy who
enjoyed making "Medal Winning" wine, some of which he graciously
donated to the team for auction or raffle.
Jack's wife, Sylvia, is a nurse and
understands the steps that were taken to do everything possible for
Jack. She is very greatful for all that was done, and sends her
sincere thank you. My thank you, too, to all of you who were major
players in all that transpired yesterday. Please keep her and the
family in your thoughts and prayers.
Masters Swimming, and Waln ut Creek Masters
in particular, is a great organization that provides for all of us
an environment to connect, exercise, socialize, and realize
the gift of belonging to something that can enhance the quality of
life in so many different ways. That was true before yesterday, and
that will hold true for all of our tomorrows.
