Annual Meeting Highlights

2013 Annual Meeting Notes:

GUEST SPEAKER.  This year we were honored to have guest speaker, Shelley Harper, share with us her swimming experience and life’s perspective which has largely been shaped through swimming.  Challenges  ~ achievement  ~ gratitude.  It’s remarkable how swimming transcends age and walks of life.  We extend our gratitude for having Shelley make time in her busy schedule to spend the morning with us.  We hope to see her in our lanes in the near future.

STATE OF THE TEAM.  Kerry presented the upcoming East Coast – West Coast competitive challenge for 2013.  This year the competition with be top 100 places in short axis strokes (breast & fly) in 50, 100, 200 & 400 distances for both yards and meters all year long.   As an incentive to participate in competition, WCM will offer varsity and junior vasristy letters that members can earn.   More details will follow.

MEET & TEAM APPAREL.  Debbie Santos (debbieschultz@yahoo.com)will be taking order for new parkas until Saturday, February 23.  Deadline for swim cap orders and embroidered swim bags is also Saturday, February 23.  (NorCal order form will be available through Kerry. )  The team suit is a continued work-in-progress.  They will not be ready by the time of the Championship meet in April, but Roque will have tech suits ready to try on and take home after the Saturday workout,  March 9.

Other team apparel can be custom ordered individually through Dora Jih.

TEAM BUSINESS.  A Team business report was delivered by Mike Piazza.  Our robust membership and swim meets have been able to meet the team’s expenses at a break-even point.   The Team has been able to build its reserve, an objective established at the 2010 Strategic Planning Meeting.   We are currently negotiating the new pool contract for the next three years;  we know the rental costs will be gradually increased to 50% more than what we currently pay.  The City of Walnut Creek extended below market value for pool rental over the last three years, as we embarked with our new organization structure.

A newly formed Walnut Creek Aquatics Foundation, comprised of representatives of the four competitive Walnut Creek swim teams and headed by Mike Heaney, will speak to City staff and WC City Council with one voice to drive us forward toward the construction/rehab of Clarke pool.

The candidates for Board positions were voted in. Executive board positions will be filled by elected Board members at the next meeting.  2013 Board:  Gordon Bell, Bruce Cousins, Sid Dowell, Loren Druz,  John King, Mike Piazza, Theresa Rounseville, Dave Skvarna, Chris Stewart,  Debbie Swigert, Walt Tuholski, Mary Williams.  Altrernates:  Craig Dennis,  Ed Lane, Jessie Smyers

Mike Piazza has served the Chairman of the Board (formerly called Team Captain) for three years.  While he still plans to play a central role on the board, he is stepping down from the chairman position.  We effusively thank him for these past years of leadership.

SWIMMING SAVES LIVES.  Leslie Mladlinich reported on the success of WCM’s new adult learn to swim program, Swimming Saves Lives.  This year we will offer 2 sessions for SSL (April and August).  Please refer to website for more information and if you are interested the rewarding experience of volunteering with SSL.

SWIM MEETS.  Chris Stewart, our meet director of four years, reports that WCM will be the sole host of the Pacific Masters Short Course Yards Championship on April 5, 6 and 7th at the Soda Aquatic Center, Moraga (Campolindo High School).  (We will alternate hosting this meet every other year with Tri-Valley Masters.)  Volunteers are essential to conduct a well-run meet.  So, whether you compete (or not) we need volunteers.   Please make a commitment to participate both as a swimmer and a volunteer meet.   The long distance events heats will be from fast to slow, rather than slow to fast.   We also host the Pacific Masters Short Course Meters meet in October.

2013 CALENDAR.  Click here for the current 2013 calendar overview.  It includes social events, meets and open water events we promote as a team.  This will be on the website, and it will be updated during the year.

MEMBERSHIPS & SWIM PASSES.   Bosco asks that all members check their WCM account on our Team Unify website andupdate credit card information.  Current information makes transactions go smoothly.  If you card expires, your charges accumulate.  Please do not wait until your last swim to renew your workout pass, since may take several days to update your account in the system at the pool reception desk.  You can purchase more than one workout pass at a time.

Special thanks to Bosco for providing the continental breakfast at the meeting.
